Many business are like a sea of apples all floating together so you cannot tell one from the other because there is no brand to distinguish them.
What is a brand? It is an identity of a specific product, service, or business usually brought out by a name, symbol, sign, color combination or slogan.
In our late world there was no such thing as brands but there were symbols that were mainly used by the kings or Nobel men or even the popes. Branding started in the 17th century in Europe, these were mainly the logos of the companies and it was done locally.
In America branding was done on cows so that owners know their livestock to prevent theft. They used a hot rod and pressed it on the cows hide to make a permanent mark. It developed further after the industrial revolution and companies started using it for products.
These are the 3 steps to follow towards building a brand:
- Create a positive believable statement, then try and back the statement with a follow up like, Ideas Africa Limited (inspired web solution). This creates a reason to believe in an organization or in you.
- Identify what the customers enjoy in your business, this is through a quantitative research.
- The brand should be more appealing by making it memorable, short, sweet, and easy.
The next article will be on Personal branding.

Any info on internal brand enhancement with staff? If your people do not believe in the brand….then as the “brand carriers” they will not represent the brand properly. I would like to hear more on that please
Thanks, that has enlightened me. Kindly let me know, does branding imply i need to register a company of sorts?
victor try and instill the values of your brand to your staff, then reward them for trying it out and make your marketing and human resource work together to instil the values in and outside of the company.
Diana Muoki it is not a must to register the company brand however it is advisable to do so, to avoid unauthorized use of your brand
Very true Victoria, most companies forget that staff members are the first customers, and so if they dont buy a concept, product or brand, it will not sell to anyone else… this is called internal brand activation. Actually I think they should be deeply involved in the development of the brand.
Sorry about the misspelling of your name Victoria.
Its alright Diana. Sam – any articles on internal brand activation soon?
